Some places ask you to slow down before they reveal themselves.

The cobblestone path through the milkwood forest

Beneath the shade of an ancient milkwood canopy, a cobblestone path meandered through the forest to my lodge. It felt like a gentle introduction to Grootbos, inviting me to slow down before the landscape revealed itself.

The view from my lodge stretched across the reserve to the vast ocean beyond. It welcomed me on arrival and became one of the memories I carried home when it was time to leave.

Everything about Grootbos encouraged me to slow my pace.

There was no pressure to rush from one activity to the next or to fill every hour with something to do. Instead, I found myself lingering on my deck, watching the changing light across the reserve and listening to the sounds of nature.

That evening, I experienced a Boma dinner.

Earlier that day, the guide who had welcomed me to Grootbos offered to keep me company over dinner so I wouldn't have to eat alone on my first night.

It was completely unexpected.

And incredibly thoughtful.

After dark, we followed a lantern-lit path through the forest to our table. Ancient milkwood trees, adorned with twinkling lights, transformed the forest into something almost magical.

It didn't feel like walking to dinner.

It felt like stepping into another world.

Even though we were dining in the forest, there was an unmistakable sense of comfort. Standing heat lamps kept the evening chill at bay, and each guest was offered a hot water bottle to cuddle if they felt cold.

Wrapped in the warmth of my hot water bottle, surrounded by centuries-old milkwood trees and the soft glow of lanterns, I found myself slowing down in a way I hadn't expected.

Dinner wasn't simply a meal.

It was part of the experience.

The conversation, the setting, and the genuine kindness shown to a solo traveler made it one of the evenings I remember from my time at Grootbos.

On my final morning, before it was time to leave, I enjoyed a spa treatment in one of the pods tucked in the milkwood forest.

As I lay there, the only sound I heard was that of sunbirds calling out. There was something deeply calming about listening to nature while enjoying the treatment.

It felt like the perfect way to end my stay.

I spent two nights at Grootbos.

There were activities I didn't have time to experience, and I could easily have filled every hour with guided excursions and adventures.

But that wasn't why I came.

I came to pause.

By the time it was time to leave, I realized I had found exactly what I was looking for.

As I packed my bags, I wasn't thinking about everything I hadn't done.

I was already thinking about coming back.

Some places leave you with photographs. Grootbos left me with a feeling.
